New Campaign
An amazing £17 million has already been raised by the public for Dundee’s fight to eliminate cancer. Now there is a fresh challenge.
Professor Wolf outlines his plans for Personalised Medicine below which will take treatment to a new and refined plane, not only with cancer but with other major diseases. This is why we are asking you to do your utmost to help us.
A Message from Professor Roland Wolf:
Drugs which have been used for about 50 years to kill cancer cells are often not effective because the drug cannot identify a vulnerable part of the tumour to attack it. So the patient can suffer distressing side effects, often without benefit. But we are confident that we can change all that, so that patients can receive a drug at the correct dose which will home in on their tumour with a much greater probability of success. We call it Personalised Medicine. To this end, we are now planning to create at Ninewells a research centre of global significance. That is the basis of this Appeal.
Dundee is among the top three cancer research centres in the world. Leading scientists are being attracted here all the time. Just recently, plans were unveiled for a major collaboration between Scottish Enterprise, four Scottish Medical schools and a giant international pharmaceutical company. The hub for this will be at Ninewells Hospital.
But the money we are asking for is totally separate from the above. The research which our Appeal will fund will be much more specific and intensive. Our sole aim is to beat cancer. We need to raise £1.5 million to build essential new laboratories for Personalised Medicine. This money is vital to our progress.
So we turn again to the people of Scotland, through the amazing Ninewells cancer campaign, which has supported us so magnificently. With your help, Dundee research may yet rid the world of the scourge of cancer. Please help us all you can. Thank you.
